Great! My hope is to expand our catalog to hundreds of games eventually. However, ...
Gathering all the information, pictures and more from hundreds of websites with thousands of pages, forums, social media posts, and analyzing hundreds of videos is hard. . I only publish the catalog for a new game when I am sure that our selection is at least 90% or more comprehensive of all the official merch for that title ever made and we are nothing less than 100% sure that we didn't accidentally include an unlicensed item. This is much harder than it sounds. You can read more about our process in the About section. I will generally require an expert who is as knowledgable about the game you are requesting as I am with with what is already on the site, to joing the LOVGC team and help moderate the content for that game.
Based on my experience, I came up with a number of guidelines:
- I currently am not accepting any franchises that pre-date 2010, even if an expert emerges. Tracking down the provenance/the origin of items pre-2010 is very tricky. These games came along in a time where online advertising hadn't dominated video game marketing, and e-commerce wasn't the clear winner yet. This meant that a lot of the items were advertised locally through physical media such as magazines, flyers and fan/subscriber mail. I found that most of these were not digitized and can't be searched efficiently. Similarly, any recordings/photos prior to 2010 simply lack the resolution required
- I currently am not considering adding any franchises from Japanese publishers/developers such as Square Enix and Capcom. There are certain exceptions to this such as From Software (for most of their games) so you are welcome to ask. This rule only exists because of what we have come to describe as unhealthy and exhausting level of merchandise these companies print. NieR and Devil May Cry are two of my top franchises, I would love to see them cataloged one day. I used to collect them pretty religiousy too. However, just keeping track of the endless flood of merch being printed, deciding what to track down and what not to pretty much resulted in PTSD so I stopped. Even in the west these companies are printing more merchandise than anyone else, and the situation is significantly worse in the Japanese market. Japan tends to be a closed and isolated market with a lot of items staying exclusive to the region, not being exported or advertised elsewhere. . Please note that I still catalog Japan exclusive releases for the Western games.
- I will not be cataloging Nintendo games for the foreseeable future. Nintendo community has always had a strong sense of preservation, documentation and archival. They have been doing this longer than anyone else and there already exists pretty comphrehensive resources and a very responsive community that people can utilize for the same purpose. I don't see any point in duplicating their work.
If you would like to request a game to be added that meets this criteria, you can email me. Once your request has been considered, you can keep track of the progress below.
Great! However being an expert for a title requires a long term commitment and is a hard task. You may be a big fan of the game, you may know it inside out, but that's not enough. You need to know it's merchandise inside out too. Know the frequent licensees and partners of the publisher, their advertising channels, the events they frequent and more.
If you are up for the challenge, email us with what game(s) you would like to be considered for now or in the future!
What to expect? We will throw a few rare and lesser known items for your title of choice your way. We expect you to know the origin for most of them and be able to track down the origin for the rest. There will be a few unlicensed, bottleg items in the mix as well which we expect you to be able to identify.
